Greek Wedding Traditions

Here is Greece! It is very pretty, exotic, and also a very historic place.

Religous Customs
 
*Predominant religon in Greece is Eastern Orthodox
*Weddings usually take place during the morning hours
*Bride and Groom fast prior to the ceremony
*Weddings will not be scheduled during the Lenten season(the Advent and Epiphany seasons (November 28th through January 6th), and the Fasting season preceding both the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul (in June) and the Feast of Dormition (in August); and special one-day fast periods.
*Bride and the Groom approach the coffesional and partake in Holy Communion to cleanse themselves of sin and become pure before the enter the alter. The orthodox members must do this also the Sunday before the wedding
*Groomsmen/Best man must be of Orthodox faith
*Bridesmaids, ushers, and other witnesses may be of other faith
*Eastern Orthodox church allows interfaith marriages, but one partner and one witness must be Eastern Orthodox.

Wedding Tradtions
 
*Includes a celebration of the formal engagement
*On day of the wedding, Groom asks Bride's father for her hand in marriage
*Groomsmen accompanies the couple to be to the church
*Best man, and the Priest are in charge of the ceremonial part of the wedding
*Priest places gold crowns, or wreaths made of orange blossoms linked by silk ribbon on their head: honored as King and Queen for the rest of their wedding day
*Bride carries a lump of sugar down the aisle to ensure a sweet fufilled life
